Sort Out Our Trains Already
I'm sick of hearing about transport ministers and their fancy plans when I'm stuck on a delayed train every morning. It's like they don't care that I've got a job to get to and kids to pick up from school. The state of our trains is a joke and it's about time someone did something about it.
I'd change the whole system so that local communities have a say in how their transport services are run. We need more control over the trains and buses that serve our areas, not some faceless company making decisions based on profits. I've seen it work with our local library, where community action made all the difference, so why can't we do the same with transport. It's not rocket science, just give us the power to make our own decisions.
The current system is broken and it's only getting worse. I've been teaching in Bolton for twenty years and I've seen the impact that poor transport links have on families.
People Over Borders
I've seen the impact of cuts to local services in Bolton and it's made me think about what we can do to help people in our own community before we start looking abroad. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we should turn a blind eye to the struggles of refugees and asylum seekers, but I think we need to get our own house in order first. We need to make sure we're providing adequate support for our own residents before we start taking on more.
That being said, I do think we have a responsibility to help those in need, and I think we can do that by working with other countries to address the root causes of these issues. But we need to make sure we're not just throwing money at the problem without a clear plan. We need to be working with local communities and organizations to provide targeted support and make sure our efforts are actually making a difference.
Why do we bother voting when half the votes get binned? Time for a system that actually counts our voices.
It makes no sense that millions of votes just vanish into thin air. You vote for someone, they don't win, and that's it, your voice is gone. Then we get a government that barely half the country voted for, claiming a mandate. How does that make any sense for a democracy? It’s not fair and it makes people feel like what they think doesn’t matter, which I see all the time in our community.
What we need is a system where every single vote genuinely counts towards who ends up in Parliament. Something like proportional representation, where the number of seats a party gets broadly matches the percentage of votes they receive across a region. You'd still get to vote for a local person, but there'd also be a regional list so that the overall result is fairer. It means if a party gets 20% of the votes, they get roughly 20% of the seats. Simple, really.
