01 Energy

Enough with the solar panel subsidies, let's just get rid of them already!

I was chatting with my mate Dave the other week, he runs a small plumbing business. He’s been absolutely hammered by rising energy costs, like most small businesses. But he was also complaining about how he sees these fancy houses with rows and rows of solar panels on their roofs, all apparently subsidised by taxpayers. It just doesn’t seem right when blokes like him are struggling to keep the lights on. It feels like we’re propping up something that should stand on its own two feet by now.

My proposal is simple: scrap all government subsidies and tax breaks for domestic solar panel installations. Let’s be honest, the technology has matured considerably. If it’s a sound investment, people and businesses will make it. If it’s not, then maybe we shouldn't be forcing it through taxpayer money.

02 Housing

Scrap the planning permission nightmare

I'm proposing that we drastically simplify the planning permission process to get more houses built quickly. This is needed because the current system is a mess, it's slow, and it's a major barrier to getting new homes built, which is why we've got a housing shortage in the first place. The system is rigged against small builders and individuals who want to self-build, and it's a goldmine for lawyers and consultants who make a living from the bureaucracy.

The current planning permission process is a nightmare, it takes years to get approval, and even then it's often denied on some trivial grounds. This means that builders can't build, and people can't buy, and the whole thing is just a waste of time and money. If we simplified the process, we could get more houses built, and that would bring prices down, which would help people get on the ladder.
