Stop Arming Dictators For Profit
I think we should stop selling arms to countries with terrible human rights records, it's that simple. We're always talking about promoting democracy and freedom, but at the same time we're selling guns to regimes that are killing their own people. It doesn't make sense to me, and it's not like we don't know what's going on, we just choose to ignore it for the sake of making a profit.
We've seen it time and time again, we sell arms to some dictator, and then we're surprised when they use them to suppress their own people. I've been working with families who have been affected by these conflicts, and it's heartbreaking to see the impact it has on them. We should be using our influence to promote peace and stability, not fueling more violence and bloodshed.
I know some people will say that this will hurt our economy, that we need to sell arms to create jobs and stimulate growth.
Hold corporations to account for river pollution
I've seen the state of our local rivers in Liverpool and it's heartbreaking. As a social worker, I've worked with families who rely on these waterways for recreation and relaxation, only to find them polluted by corporate greed. The current system of fines is clearly not working, and I agree that we need to take a tougher stance on environmental crimes.
However, I think we need to take a more nuanced approach than just imposing hefty fines on corporations. We need to look at the root causes of pollution and address the systemic issues that allow it to happen. For example, many of our local water treatment plants are outdated and in desperate need of investment, but the funding just isn't there. Instead of just punishing corporations, we should be investing in our infrastructure and providing support for businesses to adopt sustainable practices.
Our kids need this cash, not foreign coffers
I get where this is coming from, honestly. Seeing kids I know struggling because the system's stretched to breaking point makes you want to pull up the drawbridge sometimes. My mum’s still on the estate and the ‘support’ she gets is a joke. But cutting off aid isn't the answer, is it? It feels a bit like saying we can’t help our own neighbours because we’re too busy looking after our own street – but what if our street is next door?
The real problem isn't that we're giving some money away, it's that we're not putting enough into our own services in the first place. It's the same with my job. We’re drowning in paperwork, waiting lists are insane, and we're constantly relying on expensive agency staff because the proper jobs aren't funded well enough to keep people. We need to fix that here, properly fund social care, schools, the NHS, so we’re not just patching things up with sticking plasters.
Make Renewable Energy Affordable for All
I think the government should make renewable energy affordable for everyone by subsidizing the upfront costs of solar panels and wind turbines for low-income families. This is needed because right now it's only the wealthy who can afford to go green, while people like my mum who live on a council estate are stuck paying high bills for dirty energy. It's not fair that people who are already struggling have to choose between heating their homes and paying for food.
I've seen it with the families I work with, they're barely getting by and the last thing they can afford is to invest in solar panels, no matter how much it would save them in the long run. That's why the government should step in and help out, it's not like it's going to break the bank or anything. They just need to prioritize it and make it happen, instead of just talking about it like they always do.
