We need to mandate that all new urban road construction and major refurbishments must include segregated cycle lanes. This isn't about making cycling a niche hobby; it's about making it a safe, practical choice for everyone, including my son and his school friends, to get around our city.
The current situation where cyclists are forced to navigate alongside multi-tonne metal boxes is frankly absurd and dangerous. I’ve lost count of the near misses I’ve seen, let alone experienced. Dedicated, physically separated lanes would dramatically reduce accidents and encourage more people, especially families and less confident riders, to ditch their cars for short journeys. Imagine less traffic noise, cleaner air, and healthier communities – all from giving cyclists the space they deserve.
Implementing this would involve a shift in planning priorities.

Honestly, the way we treat people seeking refuge in this country just makes me sick. It feels like every policy is designed to make things as miserable as possible, a sort of deterrent by sheer unpleasantness. We're so quick to talk about border control and security, but forget that these are human beings fleeing unimaginable situations. It's a stain on our supposed values.
Instead of building walls and sending people to offshore camps, we should be focusing on a fair and humane asylum process. That means properly funded processing centres here, with qualified staff who can actually assess claims efficiently and empathetically. People should have the right to work once they've been here for a reasonable period, contributing to our society and economy, not living on scraps.
