Compassion is Vital, But So Is a Practical Plan for Public Services

It’s easy to talk about compassion from an armchair, but out here on the wards, we see what happens when people are forced to flee their homes. The stories are real, the trauma is real — and these people turn up needing help, right now. They need medical care, mental health support, a roof over their heads. It’s not just a foreign policy discussion, it’s a direct impact on our communities.

We can’t pretend we can welcome people without the resources to properly support them. The NHS is already struggling, social housing is non-existent for most — and just saying 'be kind' doesn’t magically create more beds or more doctors. We need proper government funding for local authorities, for primary care, for mental health services that can handle the extra demand. This isn’t about closing borders, it’s about making sure our own system doesn’t buckle under pressure.
