We need a national, standardised approach to road maintenance, starting with potholes. It’s ridiculous that the quality of road repair depends entirely on which local council you live in. Some areas seem to get decent patches, while others are left with crumbling surfaces that damage cars and are a nightmare for cyclists. This isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s a safety hazard and a drain on household budgets when suspension gets wrecked.
The government should set clear, minimum standards for pothole repairs and provide dedicated, ring-fenced funding directly to local authorities for this purpose. This funding should come with strict accountability. We need a system where councils have to report on the types of materials used, the depth of repairs, and crucially, a follow-up inspection system to ensure the work lasts more than a few months. Perhaps even a public portal where people can report failed repairs.
