Enough With The Green Blob’s Virtue Signalling Already

I’m sick to death of seeing my council dig up perfectly good roads for yet another "cycle superhighway" that’s barely used, while the actual traffic grinds to a halt. It’s all performative nonsense, isn't it? They’re not actually solving anything, they’re just ticking boxes for some environmental lobby group that’s never had to manage a budget or meet a payroll. We need practical solutions, not grand gestures that inconvenience everyone and achieve precisely nothing tangible.

The obsession with electric cars, for instance, is just another example. We're told they're the future, but nobody talks about the environmental cost of mining the lithium for the batteries or the strain on the grid when everyone tries to charge at 6 PM.

I'm not convinced that the alternative is to do nothing, though, and I think we should be looking at ways to improve public transport rather than just scrapping these schemes. For example, the park and ride in Leamington Spa has been really successful in reducing traffic, so maybe that's a model that could be used elsewhere. But what about the air quality issues that these cycle lanes are supposed to help with, aren't we just shifting the problem rather than solving it?

I get the frustration with some of these schemes. We had a similar bike lane put in near the bypass here that’s practically deserted most days, and it’s made getting to the garden centre a nightmare.

Honestly, it feels like they’re more interested in looking green than actually helping people or the environment. We need solutions that make sense for everyone, not just a vocal minority. My sister-in-law, who teaches over in Leeds, says they're having similar issues with public transport cuts while they're busy installing charging points nobody can afford.

So, we're supposed to believe that digging up roads for bikes nobody uses is helping the environment more than, say, just encouraging people to walk a bit further to the bus stop? Alan says the same thing about the smart motorways they keep fiddling with.
