It's time we seriously addressed the plague of ridiculously small, often poorly maintained, "city cars" that clog up our streets and take up far too much space for what they offer. My proposal is to introduce a tiered parking permit system based on vehicle footprint, effectively making it more expensive to park larger, less efficient vehicles in residential areas.
Frankly, these tiny cars are often a false economy. They encourage single-occupancy trips, contribute to congestion, and frankly, they’re a menace to parallel park. We’re seeing more and more of them, and they’re not solving the problems they claim to. Meanwhile, families needing slightly larger, more practical vehicles, or even just people who appreciate a car that doesn't feel like a tin can, are penalised by limited and expensive parking.
Under this new system, a standard family saloon or a small SUV would pay a moderate fee.

If they want people to drive less, or drive smaller cars, they should be investing in decent public transport and cycle lanes, not just fiddling with parking fees that penalise people who can’t afford a brand new hybrid. It’s all backwards.
