Law and Order: Rebuilding Trust, Not Just Rhetoric

It’s all well and good talking about community hubs and school resources, but if people don’t feel safe walking down their own streets, none of that matters. My priority, and frankly it should be everyone’s, is ensuring the rule of law is upheld. That means properly funding our police, yes, but it also means ensuring our justice system actually works, from the beat constable to the Crown Court.

I see too many cases where the system is failing. This isn't about flashy foreign policy; it's about the fundamental contract between the state and its citizens. When courts are clogged, when legal aid is a joke, and when perpetrators know they can get away with it because the system is too slow or too weak, that's not a strong community. That's a failing state.

We need to invest in the institutions that maintain order and fairness.

Wasn't there a policy about this last week that touched on community policing, someone was saying the other day that more bobbies on the beat would make a real difference, but I'm not convinced that just throwing more money at the police will fix the problem. It's about addressing the root causes of crime, like poverty and lack of opportunities, which seems to be missing from this policy. I'd like to see more on how they plan to tackle those underlying issues.

It's true that the courts seem to be the bottleneck. My husband says his friend, a solicitor, hasn't had a proper trial date set for a client in over a year now. Unless they're planning on hiring a lot more judges and court staff, I don't see how just funding the police helps if the cases can't actually get heard.

What's the proposed plan for dealing with the backlog of cases in the Crown Court, as simply increasing funding for the police won't make a difference if the courts can't process the cases efficiently?
