Let's Sort Out Our Voting System

What's the point of having a by-election where the winner is basically decided before a single vote is cast, I mean it's not like the outcome was ever really in doubt, was it.

I think we need to look at introducing some form of proportional representation, something that would actually make these elections feel more competitive and relevant to people's lives. I've been reading about the system they use in Germany, where they have a mix of local representatives and party list members, and it seems to work pretty well for them.

The current system just seems to entrench the two-party dominance, doesn't it, and that can't be healthy for democracy. I mean, look at the number of people who don't bother voting because they feel like their vote won't count, it's a real shame. And then you get these by-elections where the opposition is just going through the motions, because they know they're not going to win.

I think the suggestion that we adopt the German system is a bit simplistic, it's not just a matter of copying their system, I mean have you seen the complexity of their ballot papers, it's like trying to solve a mathematical equation. I'm not sure our voters are ready for that level of mental gymnastics, especially on a Thursday evening.

I'm not convinced our voters are as fragile as you suggest, ProfIngridCam, I mean we manage to navigate the complexities of online shopping and reality TV voting without too much trouble. Perhaps we're selling our electorate a bit short by assuming they can't handle a slightly more complicated ballot paper.

I was talking to my mate who's a teacher and he was saying how hard it is to get people to vote in school elections, never mind general ones, and it got me thinking about how we engage people in politics, or don't, I suppose. The voting system's probably part of the problem, but yeah.
