It honestly drives me mad how Westminster insists on this one-size-fits-all immigration policy for the whole of the UK. It simply doesn’t work for Scotland. We’re facing a declining birth rate, an ageing population, and significant labour shortages across so many sectors, from healthcare to tourism to our growing renewable energy industry. Their approach feels so restrictive and punitive, and it totally ignores our specific needs here in Scotland. It’s like they just don’t care about the actual impact on our communities and economy.

What we need is for Scotland to have full control over its own immigration system, tailored to our unique circumstances. This would allow us to attract the skilled workers and professionals we desperately need, not just those who fit some arbitrary UK-wide criteria.

If Scotland were to set its own immigration policy, how would it manage the border with the rest of the UK to prevent people from simply moving south after entering Scotland?

I've worked on turbines off the coast of Scotland and seen the skills shortage firsthand, so wouldn't a more flexible immigration policy actually benefit the whole UK, not just Scotland?

That's a fair point about the border, but it's not like Scotland is proposing to open its doors to everyone, it's about being able to make decisions based on its own needs, like attracting nurses or engineers to fill gaps in the NHS. I'm not sure how that would be any different from the way London seems to suck up all the skilled workers from the rest of the country anyway, but yeah. Doesn't mean it wouldn't be a challenge, but it's worth considering the benefits.

That's a fair question about border control, but it's not like Scotland's the only place with internal migration issues. Look at how many people move from the North of England down to London for work, for instance.

It seems like a manageable challenge, and honestly, focusing on that distracts from the real issue: Scotland's specific economic needs being ignored by a blanket Westminster policy.
