Scrap Tuition Fees Already

What's the point of having a supposedly free education system if you're just going to saddle students with a load of debt the minute they graduate, I mean it's not like we're made of money or anything. My proposal is to scrap tuition fees altogether, it's not like it's a radical idea or anything, plenty of other countries manage it.

The current system is just a way of pricing out working class kids from getting a degree, and that's not exactly what I'd call fair. If we want to create a more equal society then we need to start by making education accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford it. It's not like the government can't afford it, they just choose to spend their money on other things, like subsidizing big businesses or whatever.

I know some people will say that scrapping tuition fees will just mean that taxpayers will have to foot the bill, but I think that's a pretty short-sighted view.

Someone was saying the other day that the NHS is struggling to recruit nurses because of the bloody student debt they're saddled with, so how would scrapping tuition fees actually affect the workforce in public services like the one I'm in.

Scrapping tuition fees could actually help with NHS recruitment, as it would make nursing a more viable career option for people from lower income backgrounds who are often put off by the debt. I've seen this with my own students, where the thought of taking on a huge loan is a major deterrent, even if they're passionate about a career in healthcare. Doesn't this suggest that scrapping fees could have a positive impact on public services like the NHS in the long run?

I'm all for making things easier for young people, but another big government spending promise? My three coffee shops are already paying enough to the taxman, I don't think Raj would be too thrilled if we had to chip in more for everyone's degrees.

I suppose that's one way to look at it. I'd rather my plumbing customers paid for their work than expecting the whole country to subsidize their hot water.
