It’s time we overhauled how we sentence people, especially for non-violent offenses. My proposal is to introduce a unified sentencing guideline that focuses on rehabilitation and restorative justice, rather than a punitive system that disproportionately affects certain groups and often leaves individuals worse off upon release. We need to move away from the current approach where minor offenses can lead to devastating, long-term consequences, while more serious crimes sometimes seem to receive lenient treatment depending on the circumstances.
The reality is our current system often acts as a revolving door, failing to address the root causes of crime. Prisons are overcrowded and under-resourced, making genuine rehabilitation incredibly difficult.
