Time to Cut the Red Tape

I was at a business lunch the other day and met a bloke who owns a small manufacturing firm in Shrewsbury, he was telling me about the absolute nightmare he's having with all the regulations and paperwork he has to deal with just to keep his business afloat. It's like the government is more interested in strangling him with bureaucracy than in helping him create jobs and growth.

I couldn't help but think of all the times I've had to deal with HMRC and the hassle they've given me over the years, it's like they're trying to make it as difficult as possible for people to start and run their own businesses. And it's not just the big corporations that can afford to hire armies of lawyers and accountants to deal with all the red tape, it's the small businesses and entrepreneurs who are really suffering.

I get that navigating regulations can be a pain, but surely there are some rules small businesses need. Think about worker safety or environmental standards – those aren't just "red tape," they're pretty important for everyone. What kind of regulations are we talking about cutting, and what are the potential downsides for employees or the public?

You're right, love, worker safety is important. But sometimes you wonder if they just invent forms for the sake of it, chuck. Like that one asking if your stapler is "ergonomically sound.

I'm all for cutting red tape but let's be realistic, most small business owners I deal with are more worried about making their tax payments on time than they are about being strangled by bureaucracy, and simplifying the tax code would be a good place to start. Anyway, fewer forms to fill out is all well and good but it won't put food on the table if you can't afford to pay your staff.

Well, yes, if the tax code was simple enough for me to explain to my husband without him sighing dramatically, that would be a start. Still, I suppose simplifying things is easier when you're not actually trying to pay anyone.

But if they're not drowning in paperwork they might have more time to actually make something worth selling, mightn't they?
