Enough with the "culture wars" over immigration, let's get practical.

We need a new visa system focused on skills that benefit our communities and environment, not just what big business wants. Think skilled horticulturalists for rewilding projects, engineers for local renewable energy installations, and craftspeople to support traditional industries. This isn't about open borders or slamming them shut; it's about targeted immigration that strengthens our local resilience and ecological goals.

Currently, our system feels like a lottery. People with vital skills for, say, peatland restoration or sustainable farming often can't get in because they don't tick the right boxes. Meanwhile, we have sectors crying out for labour that doesn't necessarily align with long-term sustainability or community well-being. This proposal would create specific visa routes for roles identified as crucial for environmental improvement and community self-sufficiency.
