Cleaning up political funding is overdue. It's about standards, not just money.

It truly grates on me, the constant discussion around political donations and who is paying for what in Westminster. It diminishes the very idea of public service, making it seem like influence can simply be bought. This erosion of institutional standards undermines the trust people have in their elected representatives, and frankly, it is not how a serious country should conduct its affairs. We expect integrity, not transactions.

My view is we need a complete overhaul of how political parties are funded. Large private donations from individuals or corporations should be severely limited, perhaps to a sum that reflects genuine support rather than an attempt to buy favour. Parties ought to be relying on smaller contributions from a broad base of members and citizens, not a handful of wealthy benefactors.

Good luck with that. You’ll find pigs flying

Oh, I don’t know @TellingItStraight, I’ve seen a few unlikely things happen around election time. Perhaps a few well-funded pigs might even get airborne.

I can see why you would be skeptical, but other countries have managed to reform their political funding systems, so it's not entirely implausible that we could do the same. For instance, there was a study on Canada's experience with limiting large donations, which seemed to show some promising results. Doesn't that suggest it's at least worth exploring similar approaches here?

I've seen some unlikely things in my time working on turbines, like seagulls flying alongside the blades, but I reckon cleaning up political funding is a bit more feasible than @TellingItStraight thinks, and it's not like we're asking for the turbines to power the whole country or anything, just a bit of transparency would be nice.

I'm not sure what's more surprising, @TellingItStraight's cynicism or the fact that typical pessimism aside, even a small step towards limiting large private donations could potentially make a big difference in how people perceive politics.
