Why should someone in a safe seat effectively have their vote count for nothing? It’s baffling. We elect MPs to represent us, but in vast swathes of the country, the outcome is a foregone conclusion. People say they want change, but the system seems designed to keep things exactly the same, just with different faces mouthing the same old platitudes.
My idea is simple: introduce regional list voting alongside current constituency MPs. Each region would have a list of candidates put forward by the parties. After the constituency results are in, the regional lists would be used to top up Parliament to reflect the overall vote share in that region. This way, smaller parties get a fairer crack of the whip, and truly national parties can gain representation even if they aren't strong in any single constituency. It ensures every vote actually matters, no matter where you live.
