Scotland deserves better than Westminster's defence mess

I was talking to one of my pupils the other day and they mentioned their dad was in the military, stationed somewhere in England. The kid was worried sick because their dad was being sent to some godforsaken place to fight in a war that doesn't even feel like our own. It got me thinking, why are Scottish soldiers still being treated like nothing more than pawns in Westminster's game of chess.

I've always believed that an independent Scotland should have its own defence force, one that prioritizes the needs and values of our own people. We shouldn't be dragged into wars that have nothing to do with us, and our soldiers shouldn't be treated like they're nothing more than cannon fodder. It's time for us to take control of our own defence, to make our own decisions about where and when we send our troops.

I know some people will say that we're too small, that we can't afford to have our own defence force.

Honestly, the idea of Scotland having its own defence force sounds like a nice thought but where would the money come from? Defence isn't cheap, you know.

We'd need ships, planes, training, all of it. It just seems like a huge financial burden for a country that already has its hands full, but yeah.

It’s not just about the money, is it? If Scotland had its own defence, surely it would mean we wouldn’t be forced into conflicts that don’t serve our interests, saving lives and resources in the long run. Plus, think about the jobs it could create at home.

The jobs point is interesting, but I was reading something about defence procurement costs just the other day. Even for a small force, the initial outlay on equipment would be astronomical. We're talking billions before you even get a single soldier trained.

I wonder how an independent Scotland's defence force would handle its relationship with NATO and other international defence alliances, and what that would mean for the safety of our soldiers and the security of our borders.
