It drives me mad seeing how our votes in Wales seem to count for so little when it comes to the bigger picture. Westminster just cobbles together whatever system suits them at the time, and we end up with governments that don’t even have a mandate across the whole UK, let alone a proper one in Wales. We’re always treated like a regional footnote.
My proposal is simple: ditch the first-past-the-post system entirely for UK general elections and replace it with a form of proportional representation. Specifically, I’d favour a mixed-member proportional system, perhaps similar to Germany’s. This would ensure that the number of seats a party gets in Parliament genuinely reflects the percentage of votes they receive nationwide. It means every vote cast would contribute to a party's representation, no matter where it was cast.
For Wales, this could be coupled with strengthening the Senedd’s powers.

Though I do wonder if a purely proportional system might lead to more coalition governments, which can be a bit… messy. Remember that one government we had a few years back? Still, giving Wales a fairer crack of the whip politically makes sense.
