Why Are We Paying People Not To Work When We Could Just Let Them Get On With It?

What’s the point of all these taxpayer-funded schemes and endless bureaucracy designed to get people into jobs that don't even exist? It's like trying to force a square peg into a round hole with a sledgehammer. We're pouring money down the drain on training programmes that are out of date before they even start and benefits that trap people in a cycle of dependency.

My proposal is simple: slash the complexity and the cost. Abolish the vast majority of current welfare-to-work programmes. Instead, create a universal basic skills voucher. Anyone out of work can claim this voucher, which they can use to pay for accredited courses in genuinely in-demand fields. Think coding bootcamps, skilled trades, healthcare support – things businesses are actually hiring for. The private sector is far better at identifying and training for real market needs than any government department.
