I'm fed up with seeing young people priced out of the housing market, my own kids included. It's ridiculous that they're expected to shell out half their salary on rent or save up for years just to get a mortgage. I've worked hard all my life, paid my taxes, and I expect to see some sense from the government on this.
It's not just about the cost, it's about the lack of options. New builds are all about making a quick profit, not about providing decent homes for people. I'd change the rules so that developers have to include a certain percentage of affordable housing in every new development, and I mean genuinely affordable, not some watered-down version of it. This would at least give people a chance to get on the ladder.
I've heard all the excuses about how it's too expensive, how it'll stifle development, but I'm not buying it.
