Honestly, how much profit is enough? We see company after company posting record earnings, yet wages for their staff barely budge, and public services are stretched to breaking point. It’s baffling that so much wealth is concentrated in so few hands while essential services are starved. We’re told there’s no money for teachers or nurses, but there always seems to be enough for shareholder dividends and executive bonuses.
My proposal is simple: a graduated windfall tax on excessive corporate profits. If a company's profits exceed a reasonable, inflation-adjusted historical average by a significant margin – say, 25% – then a portion of that excess profit should be taxed. This isn't about punishing success, it's about ensuring that when a particular sector or company experiences an unexpected, massive surge in income, a fair share of that benefit goes back into the society that enabled it.
