We hear constantly about the need for modernisation and greater efficiency in public services. My concern, however, lies less with the comfort of the seats and more with the fundamental soundness of the procurement processes themselves. It's not just trains; look at the defence sector. We are spending vast sums, yet the equipment often arrives late, over budget, and sometimes not fit for purpose.
The public demands value for money, whether it's a train ticket or a new fighter jet. We need a robust, independent body, not beholden to ministerial whim or industry lobbyists, to oversee all major public capital projects.
