Enough with the photo ops, let's actually help people abroad!

I was watching the news the other night and they were showing some politician visiting a refugee camp somewhere far away, shaking hands and smiling for the cameras. It just struck me, what’s the point if nothing actually changes for those people? It felt so performative, and frankly, a bit insulting to folks who are really suffering. We send a lot of aid, I know, but is it getting to the right places and making a real difference on the ground?

Well, in my experience with local charities, often the most effective help comes from organisations that are already embedded in the communities they serve. They understand the local needs and culture far better than any distant government ever could. So, my proposal is for us to shift a significant portion of our foreign aid budget towards strengthening these kinds of grassroots organisations.
