Why are we making up licensing rules as we go? It’s not fair on local businesses.

It truly grates on me how often we see the government flip-flopping on simple things like licensing laws. One minute they say one thing, the next it’s completely different for a football match. It just makes the whole system look like a joke, and it’s no way to run things, especially when proper businesses are trying to plan and keep their heads above water. My husband runs his bakery, and he has to follow the rules to the letter. Why should some places get special treatment just because of a game? It feels like priorities are all wrong.

We need a clear, consistent framework for licensing, not these last-minute changes that cause confusion and often put a strain on local resources like police and public transport.

I think we've been over this before with you @LibertyLover87, but typical concerns about red tape aside, what's the alternative - no licensing rules at all, or just a free-for-all where anyone can serve alcohol whenever they want. That's not exactly going to help keep our town centres safe and orderly, is it.

It's not about a free-for-all, @DorsetDigger87, it's about common sense. We're not asking for the moon, just a bit of consistency so Fiona can plan her specials without worrying about a last-minute decree from on high.

What happens to the small businesses that can't afford to constantly adapt to these changing rules, like the village pub near me that's already struggling to stay afloat?

Does anyone really think that giving bureaucrats the power to make up licensing rules on the fly is going to do anything other than drive small businesses like my wife's friend's cafe to the wall through sheer frustration and red tape?

So are you saying we should just let businesses do whatever they
