What’s the point of cramming kids full of facts just to see if they can regurgitate them a week later? It’s like training a parrot. We’re meant to be preparing them for life, not just for the next exam. These constant tests don't actually tell us if a child is a good problem-solver, or creative, or a good team player – all the things they'll actually need when they leave school.
My idea is simple: ditch the SATs and GCSEs as we know them. Replace them with something that actually reflects what kids can do. Think portfolios, projects that solve real community problems, presentations. Imagine kids working with local businesses or the council on something tangible, learning practical skills while they’re at it. This isn't about making it easier, it's about making it more relevant.
We could pilot this in a few areas first, maybe start with years 7 and 8.
