I think we should scrap the green levy on energy bills for low income households, it's just not fair that people who are already struggling to pay their bills are being forced to subsidise renewable energy projects.
The levy is supposed to support the development of renewable energy, but in reality it's just another burden on people who can't afford it, and it's pushing more and more people into fuel poverty. I've seen it at the hospital, patients coming in with respiratory problems because they can't afford to heat their homes, it's a scandal.
The way it would work is that households on certain benefits or with incomes below a certain threshold would be exempt from the levy, it's not like it would be difficult to administer or anything. The cost could be made up by increasing the levy on bigger businesses or by finding efficiencies elsewhere in the energy system, there are plenty of options.
