I’m so fed up with seeing people, especially young people, get criminal records for carrying a bit of cannabis or some other relatively harmless substance. It completely messes up their lives, making it impossible to get jobs or housing, and for what? It doesn't solve anything. We’re just creating more problems and clogging up the justice system with stuff that should be handled differently. It feels like a complete waste of police time and taxpayer money.
We should be decriminalising personal drug use and focusing resources on actual help and harm reduction. Instead of prison, people caught with small amounts should be offered immediate access to counselling, addiction support services, and education about the risks.
