Last month I was driving past one of those massive new build estates out near Dalkeith. It looked like it had been dropped in from space, with rows of identical boxes, tiny gardens, and no obvious shops or anything for people to actually do. They’re calling them "sustainable communities" but honestly, they look anything but sustainable in any meaningful sense. Just a sea of grey tarmac and thinly veneered plywood.
This constant push for quantity over quality, letting developers just churn out houses for maximum profit, is a disaster. There’s no incentive to build homes that last, or that are genuinely pleasant to live in, or that actually connect to public transport or the existing community. We end up with these isolated, energy-inefficient dormitories that cost a fortune to heat and probably won't be standing in forty years.
