Get Rid of Car Lanes on Busy City Roads

I think we should convert at least one car lane on every major city road to a dedicated bike and bus lane, it's the only way we'll ever reduce congestion and pollution. This is desperately needed because our city is choking on traffic, and it's not just frustrating for drivers, it's also making our air toxic and our commutes longer. I see it every day on my way to school, the roads are clogged and the buses are stuck in the same traffic as everyone else, so they're not even a viable option for most people.

We need to give people a real alternative to driving, and that means making public transport and cycling more appealing, which in turn means making them faster and safer. By taking away a lane from cars, we can make room for a proper bike lane, with a barrier to protect cyclists from traffic, and a dedicated bus lane that can actually move at a decent pace.

I'm not convinced that taking away a car lane will automatically make public transport and cycling more appealing, I think it's more important to sort out the buses themselves, like making them more frequent and reliable, before we start reducing road space. I've seen it in other cities where they've done this and the buses are still late and overcrowded, so it's not just about the lane. What's to stop the dedicated bus lane just getting clogged with taxis and delivery vans instead?

typical SensibleSam, always looking for reasons why something won't work, I think we've been over this before but it's worth saying that in some cities this has actually worked, like in London where the bus lanes are enforced with cameras to keep taxis and vans out, so it's not just a matter of taking away a lane. I'm not convinced that sorting out the buses first is a prerequisite for giving this a try, it seems like a bit of a chicken and egg problem. What's wrong with trying to tackle both issues at the same time, improving bus services and making road space more efficient?
