Right, let's get some proper renewable energy sorted for Wales, not just more Westminster talk.

We need a Welsh Renewable Energy Fund, financed by a significant portion of the Crown Estate revenues currently managed from London. This fund would exclusively back community-owned renewable energy projects across Wales, like solar farms on disused industrial land or small-scale tidal power in suitable coastal areas. It’s about putting Wales in the driving seat for its own energy future, not waiting for handouts or approvals from elsewhere.

The current system just doesn't work for us. Westminster’s energy policies are often a one-size-fits-all approach that ignores the unique potential and needs of Wales. We have incredible natural resources – wind, tidal, solar – that could power our communities and create good jobs right here.

So, this fund would only pay for community-owned projects, does that mean the big wind farms we already see won't get a look in, even if they’re technically in Wales?

That’s a fair question. The policy specifically mentions community-owned projects, so yes, the big commercial farms probably wouldn't qualify.

It makes sense though. Think about that small wind co-op up in Snowdonia a few years back. They pooled their resources and actually got a turbine going, which then paid dividends back to the local villagers. That's the kind of distributed ownership and benefit the fund seems to be aiming for, rather than just lining the pockets of a big corporation.

Someone was saying the other day about how difficult it is for smaller businesses to access funding; I wonder if this fund would have simplified application processes, or would it be another mountain of paperwork?

It sounds nice in theory, but how are these community projects supposed to handle the upfront costs? My mum’s estate is on the council's books, and the amount of paperwork for even a small repair job is unreal. I can't imagine the bureaucracy for a whole solar farm.

Mock the policy. Not the person. Community principles →
