Why are we letting prime historical properties get snapped up by offshore companies who do nothing with them, while young Welsh families can’t afford a decent place to live in their own communities? It’s madness, plain and simple. We have centuries of history etched into the stones of these buildings, and they should be serving the people of Wales, not sitting empty as speculative assets for some anonymous firm.
My proposal is to create a Welsh Heritage Housing Trust. This trust would have the first right of refusal on any sale of listed buildings or properties within designated conservation areas. Priority would be given to Welsh residents and community groups looking to restore and occupy these homes, or to turn them into community assets like museums, cafes, or affordable housing.
