I was talking to my mate Dave the other day, whose business exports machinery to Europe. He’s absolutely fuming about the endless paperwork and delays just to get a lorry through Calais. Now they’re talking about paying the French to build a whole new facility? It’s like paying someone to keep your dodgy neighbour’s rubbish pile on their side of the fence, instead of tidying your own garden.
This whole approach is backward. We’re effectively paying another country to manage a problem that’s fundamentally ours. It’s not just the cost, which I’m sure will balloon, but the principle. It undermines our sovereignty and frankly, it’s a terrible deal. If we can’t control our own borders effectively, what can we control? It feels like a massive abdication of responsibility.

I was talking to a mate who's a lorry driver and he's always moaning about the state of the roads and the delays at Calais, and now we're going to pay the French to sort out our migrant problem, it's just ridiculous. It's like paying someone to tidy up your garden when you should be doing it yourself, it's just not right.
It reminds me a bit of when we had that really bad flu outbreak last winter and the health trust in the next trust over just started redirecting ambulances to us because they were overwhelmed. It didn't solve anything, it just made our situation worse and created a backlog. This feels exactly like that, but with human lives.
