I was chatting with my neighbour the other day, a lovely woman who works as a carer. She was telling me how she feels completely invisible politically. Her vote, she said, never seems to make a difference in her constituency because it’s always a safe seat for one of the major parties. She’s passionate about social care funding and environmental issues, but feels like she has to vote tactically for a candidate who doesn't really represent her views just to stop someone worse getting in. It struck me then, how many people must feel this way across Wales.
This system we have, First Past the Post, is fundamentally broken. It leads to tactical voting, disenfranchises millions, and creates ‘safe seats’ where politicians can get elected without truly earning the support of their constituents.
