We need to introduce a mandatory 'eco-levy' on all new fast fashion clothing sold in the UK. This isn't about penalising people for buying clothes, but about making the companies that profit from disposable trends pay for the massive environmental damage they cause. Think of it like the plastic bag charge, but for clothes that end up in landfill after a few wears.
The current system is unsustainable. Mountains of textile waste are choking our planet, and the production of these cheap garments uses enormous amounts of water, energy, and often involves harmful chemicals. These fast fashion brands churn out new collections weekly, encouraging a throwaway culture that we simply can't afford anymore. We're essentially subsidising environmental destruction with every £5 t-shirt bought.
The revenue generated from this levy should be ring-fenced for specific environmental initiatives.
