Why are we paying energy companies a fortune when my mum's heating is off again?

So, how much profit did the energy giants make last year while people like me are choosing between heating and eating? It’s honestly a joke. They get bailed out, we get told to wear jumpers. This new policy is simple: cap their profits at a reasonable amount, say 5% above operating costs, and use the excess to create an emergency energy fund for vulnerable households and those on Carer's Allowance. We’re talking about keeping people alive, not funding their third yacht.

This fund would be directly managed, not handed over to some faceless corporation. It would cover essential heating bills, provide grants for energy efficiency upgrades – think proper insulation, not just more draught excluders – and ensure a baseline supply so no one has to face the cold. It's about basic dignity. My mum can’t tell me she’s cold, so I have to constantly worry.

I'm sure the energy companies will just take this lying down and not try to increase prices or find loopholes, because that's exactly what happens when you try to cap profits - they all just become altruistic overnight. It's not like they have teams of accountants and lawyers waiting to pounce on any attempt to limit their earnings.

Sounds like a crackin' idea to me, capping their profits and whatnot, though I reckon the energy giants will be quakin' in their boots at the prospect of only makin' a 5% profit margin, poor souls. It's about time someone told 'em to stop linin' their pockets and start keepin' our grans warm instead.

I'm not sure what's more surprising, the fact that energy companies might have to survive on a 5% profit margin or that anyone thinks they'll just quietly accept that without trying to find a way to pass the cost on to the rest of us.
