We need a concerted, international effort to clamp down on corporate tax avoidance. It’s frankly scandalous that so many large, profitable companies pay so little tax in this country, or indeed anywhere, while ordinary working people and small businesses bear the brunt of the tax burden. This isn't about punishing success; it's about ensuring fairness and funding the public services we all rely on.
The current system, which allows vast sums of money to be shuffled between jurisdictions to minimize tax liabilities, is fundamentally broken. We see multinationals reporting billions in profits but contributing pennies in tax. This lost revenue represents a direct hit to our ability to invest in schools, hospitals, and infrastructure – precisely the things that create real economic opportunity and social mobility.
