Scrap the CAP, it's killing our farms

I was talking to a friend who's a farmer just outside Perth and he was at his wit's end, the EU's Common Agricultural Policy has been a disaster for his business, the paperwork alone is crippling him, and the subsidies never seem to make it to the people who actually need them.

I've seen it time and time again, small farms being squeezed out by massive agricultural corporations, it's not what farming should be about, it's not about producing cheap food for supermarkets, it's about producing good food for local people.

The Scottish parliament should have the power to create its own agricultural policy, one that supports small farms and promotes local produce, we don't need some faceless bureaucrat in Brussels telling us how to run our farms.

Someone was saying the other day that all we need is for the government to get out of the way and let local communities thrive, which sounds lovely until you remember that without some sort of support, small farms will be squeezed out by the big boys, and we'll be left with nothing but supermarkets selling wonky vegetables at inflated prices. It's a bit like the transport issue Kaz_24 mentioned, you can have all the local produce you want, but if nobody can get to it, it's all a bit pointless.

I was at a community meeting last night and someone mentioned how hard it is for local farmers to even get their produce into our town's markets, which made me think of this policy, but what really struck me was the lack of decent public transport to even get to those markets in the first place.

Mock the policy. Not the person. Community principles →
