We should implement a form of proportional representation, specifically the Single Transferable Vote, for all general elections. It’s the only way to ensure that the seats in Parliament actually reflect the votes cast by the public. The current first-past-the-post system is an archaic relic that consistently distorts the national will, creating safe seats and punishing smaller parties unfairly.
This isn't just about fairness for fringe parties; it's about making every vote count. Under FPTP, millions of votes are effectively wasted every election cycle. People vote tactically, not for who they truly support, because they know their vote for a smaller party is unlikely to translate into representation. This breeds cynicism and disengagement, which is hardly conducive to a healthy democracy. STV would encourage genuine political choice and lead to a more representative Parliament.

But when you talk about single transferable votes, I can't help but think about how that might work in practice for local council elections. Would it mean we'd have even fewer local councillors for each area, making it harder to get hold of someone who actually knows your street?
