VAT cuts are just a quick fix

I was talking to a friend who owns a small cafe in Cambridge the other day and she was telling me about the struggles of keeping her business afloat with all the current economic pressures. She said that while a VAT cut might give her a bit of breathing room in the short term, it wouldn't address the underlying issues that are driving up her costs and making it hard for her to hire staff.

I think that's a common problem with a lot of the economic policies that get proposed - they're just quick fixes that don't really get at the root of the problem. My friend's cafe is struggling because of a combination of factors, including rising rents, increased competition from bigger chains, and a shortage of skilled workers. A VAT cut might give her a bit of a boost, but it's not going to solve any of those deeper problems.

What we need is a more comprehensive approach to supporting small businesses and promoting economic growth.
