It absolutely drives me mad seeing the constant tinkering with Capital Gains Tax. Every time the government needs a quick bit of cash, they look at CGT as if it's some sort of magic money tree. It’s just a tax on success, on people who’ve taken risks and built something. Honestly, it feels like a punishment for being prudent and investing wisely. Sarah and I try to save for the kids’ futures, and the thought of the taxman swooping in on any gains we make is just… disheartening.
We need a radical simplification and reduction. My proposal is to slash the main CGT rate to a flat 10% for individuals, bringing it in line with the lower end of income tax. For businesses, let’s aim for 15%. This isn't charity; it’s about encouraging people to invest, to take those risks that actually create jobs and wealth.
