what's the point of having a system that punishes pubs for having a decent location, I mean my business rates have gone up just because the area's gotten a bit more popular, it's like they want us to fail.

I was talking to one of my regulars the other day and he said something that stuck with me, he said the government's always going on about supporting small businesses but when it comes down to it they're just not doing enough, I mean business rates are a huge burden on us and it's not like we can just absorb the cost, we've got to pass it on to the customers and that's just not fair.

It’s a good point about location though. I've seen the same thing with some of the corner shops near the school, their rates jump because the area's gentrifying, and then they start cutting back on things like healthy snack options for the kids.

Scrapping business rates for pubs is a decent idea, but why stop there? My rates have gone up too, just for being on a decent road into town. If it helps pubs, it should help all small businesses struggling with the same problem.

Scrapping business rates for pubs sounds like a grand idea in principle, but I wonder how that would actually work in practice. Would it just shift the tax burden elsewhere, or would it mean less money for public services that those same pubs rely on? We've seen similar things proposed before, and the devil's always in the detail.
