Scrap Care Home Fees for Carers

I think the goverment should scrap care home fees for people who have been caring for their relatives at home, it's the least they can do after all we've been through. My mum has severe arthritis and I've been looking after her for years, it's been a struggle but we've managed so far, but I know that won't always be the case.

I've seen what happens when people can't cope anymore and have to put their loved ones in care homes, the fees are extortinate and it's not like they have a choice, it's a terrible situation to be in. I've had to use some of my mum's savings to pay for extra help and it's definately taken a toll on our finances, but at least we're still together.

If the goverment scrapped these fees it would be a huge weight off our shoulders, we could finally get some peace of mind knowing that we're not going to loose everything we've worked for.

How would the government plan to make up for the lost revenue from scrapping care home fees, and would it lead to cuts in other vital social services that carers like myself also rely on?

I was talking to a friend whose mum is in a care home and they're having to sell their family house to pay the fees, it's heartbreaking, and it makes me think that maybe we should be looking at a more radical overhaul of how we fund social care rather than just tinkering with fees.

Yeah but if they scrap the fees for people looking after relatives then doesn't that mean those people won't need a place in a care home anyway? So the revenue lost isn't really lost is it, because there's less demand for the service in the first place.

It’s a nice thought, but who’s going to foot the bill for all those care home places that remain vacant? The government isn’t exactly known for its efficiency in managing resources. Plus, wouldn't this just encourage people to keep relatives at home longer, potentially delaying necessary professional care and increasing costs down the line?

The issue isn't just about lost revenue from care home fees, it's about the cost of providing adequate support to carers so they can continue looking after relatives at home. I've seen it in my practice, where carers are shouldering the burden without proper respite or funding, and it's unsustainable. Would scrapping care home fees actually encourage more people to take on caring responsibilities without addressing the underlying support system?
