Enough with the endless car lanes, let's build proper cycle tracks now.

We need to mandate the creation of genuinely segregated cycle infrastructure on all new and major road-renewal projects. This isn't about painting a white line and calling it a cycle lane; it's about physical separation from motor traffic, like they do so well in the Netherlands. Think protected lanes, not just suggestions.

The current situation is frankly a disgrace. We’re spending billions on infrastructure that prioritises cars, then expecting people to cycle past lorries on busy roads. It’s dangerous and puts off the vast majority of potential cyclists who aren’t looking for an extreme sport. Proper infrastructure would unlock cycling for families, older people, and anyone who values not being flattened.

This would involve reallocating road space, which inevitably means fewer car lanes or narrower ones in some places.

Someone was saying the other day we need to focus on practical solutions for commuters, now we're talking about building cycle tracks, which is a step in the right direction, but I'm still waiting to see how this will actually work in reality.

Well, that'll be a treat for the seagulls,

Someone was saying the other day we need more places for pigeons to hang out. Guess this covers that too.

With all due respect, I do hope the seagulls

i mean, at least the seagulls would have safer places to cross the road if we actually built them.

I'm not sure this will make a difference for people who live and work in areas with no decent public transport, like where I am near Swindon, we need to sort out the buses and trains before we start building fancy cycle tracks. I mean, I like cycling and all, but it's not exactly practical when you've got a 10-mile commute each way. How's this going to help people who can't afford to live near their work anyway?
