I agree with the idea that we need to equip our children for the online world. But just 'digital literacy classes' feels a bit like a sticking plaster on a gaping wound. We need to be thinking bigger. Our schools are already stretched so thin, and adding more compulsory subjects, even important ones, without proper resources just isn’t realistic.
Instead of just a separate class, I think we need to properly embed critical thinking and media evaluation across the entire curriculum. History lessons can analyse propaganda, English can dissect persuasive online articles, and even science can look at how data is presented. This way, it’s not just another box to tick, but a fundamental part of how we teach everything. We should also be looking at how we can use this to promote Scottish history and culture online, giving our kids a stronger sense of their own identity in a globalised world.
