Scrap the HS2 White Elephant

I'm proposing we cancel the HS2 project and divert the funds to upgrading our existing rail network, it's a no-brainer when you look at the costs and benefits. The current plans are going to soak up over a hundred billion pounds, which could be better spent on fixing the potholes and delays that plague our daily commutes.

We need to prioritize the transport needs of the many over the vanity project of the few, and that means investing in the lines and stations that people use every day. I'm not against progress, but I am against wasting money on a high-speed line that will only benefit a tiny fraction of the population, and that's being generous.

The existing rail network is creaking under the strain of demand, and it's only going to get worse if we don't do something about it. By upgrading the lines and signals, we could increase capacity and reduce journey times, making a real difference to people's lives.

Scrapping HS2 to fix potholes sounds like a plan someone would come up with after a particularly bumpy commute. Still, Barnaby’s back legs might thank us for smoother roads.

I think it's more than just a bumpy commute that's got people thinking we should scrap HS2, it's the fact that our kids can't even get a decent meal at school because of funding cuts, and that's what really gets my goat. I've seen it firsthand, love, as a dinner lady, the state of some of our schools is a crying shame, and maybe if we diverted that HS2 money we could actually make a difference to the people who need it. What's the point of a fancy new train line when our schools are struggling to keep their heads above water — it just doesn't add up to me.

Someone was saying the other day that we should be focusing on practical infrastructure, not vanity projects. Fixing potholes feels a lot more practical than some high-speed rail line that'll be obsolete before it's even finished.
