Enough with the plastic tat - time to make producers pay for packaging waste!
Seriously, why are we still drowning in single-use plastic packaging when the companies making it barely lift a finger to deal with the mess? It’s like letting someone trash their own house and then expecting the neighbours to clean it up.
My proposal is simple: Extended Producer Responsibility, but actually meaningful this time. We need laws that make the companies who put all this packaging onto the market legally and financially responsible for its collection and recycling. Not just a token gesture, but proper financial penalties and targets that they absolutely have to meet. Think about the sheer volume of plastic wrapping on everyday items, the plastic bottles, the boxes within boxes. It all has to go somewhere, and right now, "somewhere" usually means landfill or, worse, our oceans.
This isn't just about making things look tidier.
Why are we spending billions on weapons when our coastlines are drowning? Defence needs a rethink.
Seriously, what are we even defending if our towns are underwater and our food systems are collapsing? This whole idea of defence as just tanks and planes seems so outdated. We're facing existential threats that climate change is directly causing, yet our military budget is still stuck in the last century. It’s like bringing a sword to a tidal wave fight.
We need to fundamentally redefine what "defence" means. Instead of pouring money into offensive capabilities, let’s pivot hard into climate resilience and environmental security. Think massive investment in coastal defences, advanced weather prediction and disaster response for extreme events, and international cooperation on climate refugees. This isn't about being soft; it's about being smart. Protecting our people means protecting our planet first.
