What's the point of offshore wind if we still burn gas at home?

Why are we spending billions building massive wind farms out at sea, only to keep relying on burning imported gas for heating and backup power? It makes no sense. We’re basically powering the turbines with one hand and then negating their benefit with the other. The whole point of these turbines is to decarbonise our energy, not just to make us feel good about ourselves while the gas lobby still calls the shots.

My idea is simple: let’s actually use the power we generate. We need a massive push to electrify heating, starting now. This means government grants and incentives for heat pumps, proper insulation programs for every house, and developing smart grid technology so we can manage the power flow better. If the wind’s blowing and the turbines are spinning, that energy should be going into heating homes, not sitting idle or being used to justify keeping old gas plants open.

Time to Make Corporations Pay Their Fair Share

So why are massive corporations getting away with paying basically no tax while I'm out here on the North Sea working my arse off to keep the lights on. It's just not right that they're making billions off our natural resources and our labour, and then they've got the nerve to claim they're barely breaking even.

I'm proposing that we introduce a new tax on large corporations that are operating in the UK, specifically those in the energy sector. This tax would be based on their actual profits, not some dodgy accounting figure that lets them claim they're not making any money. And the revenue generated from this tax would be invested straight back into local communities, like Grimsby, that are hosting these massive offshore wind farms.

It's not like these corporations are going to pack up and leave if we make them pay a bit more tax, they're making too much money off us already.

Teach the Whole Story in Schools

I've been thinking about the way we teach history in schools and I think we need to make sure we're giving kids a proper understanding of our past, the good and the bad. I'm not saying we should be ashamed of what we've done, but we should be honest about it. I've worked on those offshore wind turbines in the North Sea and I've seen how our country can come together to achieve something amazing.

We should be teaching kids about the struggles of working-class people in Britain, about the fight for workers' rights and the role of trade unions in shaping our country. That's the kind of history that can inspire people to make a difference. My girlfriend is a teacher and she's always saying that kids need to see themselves in the history they're learning, they need to see how it's relevant to their lives.
