Honestly, sometimes I wonder why we even bother turning up to vote. You look at places, especially around here, where the result is basically set in stone before a single ballot is cast. Your vote, my vote, all the mates down the pub, it just gets swallowed up. It feels like a massive waste of time, like the politicians already know they’ve got it sorted because of how the system works.
There’s got to be a better way than first-past-the-post, which just rewards parties for having concentrated support in a few areas. We should be looking at something like Proportional Representation. It’s not some crazy new idea, loads of other countries do it. Basically, if a party gets X percent of the votes across the whole country, they get roughly X percent of the seats in Parliament.
It means every vote matters.
