I've seen my fair share of bureaucracy in the army and now in civvy life, and it's a right old mess. Appointing ambassadors and senior diplomatic staff shouldn't be about who you know, it should be about who's got the skills for the job. The current system's a joke, all about political patronage and not what's best for the country.
We need to get the head shed out of the way and let the Foreign Office get on with it, but not just give them a free rein. We should be looking at a mix of internal and external assessments to make sure we're getting the best people, not just the ones with the right connections. And it's not just about the individual, it's about the team they're going to be working with, so we need to consider how they'll fit in with the rest of the diplomatic corps.
I'm not convinced that external evaluators are the answer, though. We've got some top-notch people in the Foreign Office who know what they're doing, so let's use them.
